Leaving St. Mark's Square, we come to the Chiesa della Salute. We pass the elegant theatre, La Fenice, Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo, and Saint Stephen's Church. At the Gallerie dell'Accademia, you can see the evolution of classical Venetian art, from the polyptych of Paolo and Lorenzo Veneziano in the Byzantine-Gothic style, to the paintings of Giovanni Bellini, Carpaccio, Titian, Paolo Veronese, Tintoretto, up to Giambattista Tiepolo, the last great artist before Napoleon arrived in Venice.

A must for those who love modern art is the Peggy Guggenheim Foundation, which bears masterworks by Picasso, Kandinsky, Max Ernst, Jackson Pollok and many other artists from the first half of the nineteenth century.

Walking along the Zattere, we arrive at the Madonna della Salute, a votive and Baroque church, designed by Baldassare Longhena in thanks for the end of the pestilence scourge of 1630-31.
